Yesterday I completed my first ever 10K run, I didn’t vomit, I didn’t stop, I actually completed it and better still I got to do it with an incredible group of girls.

For the first 4K I stuck with the girls, we took an exorbitant amount of selfies, cheered past Josey DJing and pushed each other to continue past the stitches. Around 4 1/2K I felt confident enough to go at my training pace and ran solo for the rest of the race.

The idea that your outcome is dependent solely on how strong your resolve is becomes incredibly prevalent when going it alone. During 7K I hit ‘the wall’ due to an excruciating pain in my knees which I was convinced meant STOP RIGHT NOW (runners knee apparently) but, through gritted teeth I saw it through and by the time I got to 8K it felt like nothing.

The female camaraderie at points (especially during the sugary announcements and mixed message visuals) sadly bordered on condescending. Propelling a group of women to achieve our goals at the irrational thought of Ryan Gosling at the finish line lying in wait for us subsequently eroded some of the empowering message Elle and Nike were trying to get across. I am however proud to have taken part in something that made myself and other females realise our enormous capacity to achieve great things together when we push ourselves.

Now for the sentimentality… I genuinely couldn’t have done it without my boyfriend who trained me even when I was screaming ”I hate you and running”. My friends, first and foremost Sarah Mei the protagonist of reluctant runners who coerced me into running, kitted me out in trainers and believed (before I did) that I could do it. I’m so glad and proud to have enjoyed this experience with so many women I care about - Clara, Saima, Zayns, Zezi which was even more enhanced by the enthused cheers at the sideline from Joe, Kirby and Dave. The culmination of all these people and things made me so much more determined to finish… I think I might run again (knees willing).
